The Thin membrane which partially covers the vaginal opening is called the hymen. When this tears, usually with the first penetrative sexual intercourse, there may be some bleeding. In many culures, the presence of the hymen is taken as a proof of virginity. But, there are many other causes for the membrane to tear, for example some strenuous physical activities like horse riding. And even if the membrane is intact, in one third of cases the first penetrative intercourse may not be accompanied by bleeding. And some women who have has intercourse can still have an intact hymen. Most people are not aware of this fact and may wrongly blame women.

Restoring the hymen by reconstructive surgery is called hymenoplasty or hymen reconstruction surgery and some women opt for it for social reasons. It is usually done as day case surgery under local anaesthetic and the patient can go home the same day.

Aesthetic surgery of this area is delicate and precise and should only be undertaken by appropriately trained and experienced plastic and cosmetic surgeons.
